IEPs, 504s & BIPs

If the evaluation team determines that your child is eligible for special education services and/or accommodations, several possible options exist to support their disability in the school setting. Ohio Student Advocacy assists families in the development and ongoing analysis of the below educational plans.

 

Section 504 of Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Plans (504 Plans) are developed to ensure that a child has equal access to an education. Although a 504 Plan can be creatively written to include many things, accommodations and modifications are the most frequently implemented supports for these students. 504 Plans are overseen by the Office of Civil Rights.

 

Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) are utilized if your child qualifies for special education services that are customized to meet his or her unique needs. Mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), an IEP must contain these elements:

  • Accurate and current performance data from the academic setting

  • Clear definitions of ALL areas of need that exist as a result of the disability

  • Measurable goals that are written for the student to make reasonable progress in the curriculum

  • Progress monitoring information

  • Specific explanations of your child's special education services; who will provide the instruction, what instruction will occur, where will it happen and when will it be delivered.

IEPs are overseen by the department of education at the state and ultimately, the federal level.

 

Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) are developed if is determined that your child has behavioral challenges that interfere with their learning or the learning of others. BIPs should clearly define the problem behavior(s) and identify any triggers or other factors that can exacerbate the behavior. The BIP should focus on using positive interventions that are designed to increase the desired outcomes and reduce negative behaviors. BIPs are also overseen by the department of education at the state and federal levels.
